A Thousand Cranes

1281197158196_w185.jpgA Thousand Cranes

by Kathryn Schultz Miller

A Thousand Cranes is the true and poignant story of Sadako Sasaki and her quest to fold a thousand paper cranes.  Sadako was only two years old when the Hiroshima bomb fell and seemed to be unharmed, but at twelve she was diagnosed with "radiation sickness" an aftermath of the bomb's effects. With boundless optimism, she takes an old story to heart:
"If a sick person folds a thousand paper origami cranes the gods will grant her wish and make her well again. She begins to fold her thousand cranes."

When her father doesn’t return from a trip to the local fair, Belle rushes off to find him. To her dismay, she discovers he is being held captive in an old castle by a horrible beast. She trades her freedom for his and the “tale as old as time” begins. How Belle tames the unfortunate Beast and his ultimate transformation into a handsome prince continues to enthrall audiences.

Once on This Island, Jr, - May 2007

island_big.gif

This is the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a young man from a wealthy family. When Daniel is returned to his people, the gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.

Told in a presentational style reminiscent of story theatre, it is equally effective regardless of its cast size and features minimal - though colorful - sets and costumes that capture the imagination of the audience. Creative dance or movement-driven staging is also part of the show's style, calling upon performers to portray trees, wild animals and even a fierce rainstorm.

With its touching story and catchy pop and Caribbean flavored score by songwriters of the film Anastasia and the Broadway smash Ragtime, Once On This Island Junior is a multi-cultural feast for the heart, mind, and soul.

From the Pacific Northwestern Native Americans is the story of the ocean and its tides. From South America we learn how the beetle got its beautiful coat, while from Asia is the tale of why toads croak before a rain storm. The play ends with an Aesop fable from Europe that tells why the bat flies alone and at night. Weaving it all together is a Cherokee fable that explains the bringing of stories into the world. The tales are humorous, touching and explore the richness of                                                    other cultures.
